Net metering lets you use the grid like a battery. When your panels produce more than you consume, the surplus is exported and recorded by a bi-directional meter.
How billing works
At the end of each billing cycle, exported units are subtracted from imported units. You pay only for the net consumption plus fixed charges.
What happens to excess credits?
Policies vary by state — credits may carry forward and be settled annually at a notified rate.
